Children’s Home Abuse
Children’s homes exist to protect vulnerable children who don’t have anyone else turn to. Children are brought to Children’s homes to be looked after and to receive the care that they need; sadly however this isn’t always the case.
There have been several instances where children within these homes have been abused by the very people appointed to help them. Many victims of abuse in care homes are often too afraid to come forwards, fearing if they do they will be faced with more of the same or worse.
Children who are abused within children’s homes feel that they have no one to turn to and often believe that no one would believe them even if they did come forwards. Over the years we have seen children who have been physically, mentally or sexually abused at the hands of their careers within these children’s homes. Cases like this can leave psychological scars on these children which often results in psychological injury such as depression, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders and personally changes.
Compensation claims from people who suffered as children in children’s homes have already started to come forwards from various past cases of abuse such as claims that came about last year revolving around children’s homes in Manchester, where a total of £2 million was paid out to victims of abuse.
In 2006 children who lived in the Nazareth House in Scotland were awarded compensation after being abused/beaten and humiliated by the nuns who were meant to be taking care of them.
The compensation that victims of abuse receive is paid out for the lifelong effects that the abuse has had on them as well as medical expenses that have occurred since.
Even today more discoveries of the shocking and horrific events that have taken place within the walls of children’s homes are coming to light, such as the recent discovery of the disturbing secrets held within the walls of St Martin’s children home in Jersey which closed its doors back in 1986. Victims of all kinds of abuse are starting to come forwards who suffered for years at the hands of their elders and the people put in place to protect them.
