Nursery Accidents

When it comes to children and accidents many of the injuries that they sustain purely are just caused through innocent accidents where no one was to blame; getting cuts and bruises are just part of growing up right? Yes but when a child is injured due to negligence this is another story.

Nursery school is put in place as a way of getting children used to interacting with each other. It is a way of familiarising them with being away from their parents and easing them into the routine of school. It also allows parents to get on with work and household chores and as a parent you expect that when you leave your child in the hands of nursery teachers that they will be safe and secure and in most instances this is true as nursery’s take care to ensure that your child is being looked after at all times but there are sadly instances where more should have been done to protect the welfare of your child.

Within a nursery environment there should always be at least two members of staff on duty at all times to be looking after the children there. If however for some reason there is only one and an accident were to happen to your child the nursery would be left open to being liable.

As well as ensuring that there is sufficient staff on duty within a nursery the building, equipment within it and the electrical appliances associated with it all need to pass safety checks regularly as loose wiring could result in shocks or burns and faulty or defective toys, tables or chairs etc could leave a child suffering arm or leg injuries as well as broken or fractured bones.

Children within a nursery should also be drilled on a regular basis about what to do in a fire alarm situation.

Any accidents that occur within a nursery must be recorded in the accident book, which should be used to provide details of the date, time and nature of the accident and injury as well as if any treatment was given. This needs to be signed by the member of staff who administers first aid.

If your child has suffered an injury whilst at nursery that was caused through negligence or unsafe conditions then you could be entitled to claim for compensation on their behalf.
