Burn Injuries

Burns are a heat injury to the skin. They are most commonly caused by exposure to flames, hot objects and hot liquids as well as possibly being caused by radiation.

You also have the possibility of suffering from electrical burns although these are less common but are potentially more serious as the depth of the burn is usually greater than first apparent.

It is estimated that 112,000 people visit Accident and Emergency departments each year as a result of burns and around 7800 of are admitted to hospital or specialist burns units every year. More alarmingly however is the 200 people who die as a result of burns every year.

Many of the people who sadly suffer from burns every year suffer them as a result of  personal injury accidents that are caused through no fault of their own such as road traffic accidents, work place accidents or accidents at public events. If you have suffered burns through an accident that was caused through no fault of your own then you could be entitled to compensation.

Burns can either be minor or major they are categorised through a first to sixth rating, sixth being the worst and most likely fatal. First-degree burns are usually limited to redness (erythema), a white plaque and minor pain at the site of injury. Fourth-degree burns damage bone tissue and may result in a condition called compartment syndrome, which threatens the life of the limb. Finally sixth-degree burns are the most severe; all of the muscle tissue in the affected area will be destroyed, leaving charred bone. This degree of burn is mostly always deadly.
