Quadriplegia

Quadriplegia is paralysis which affects all four limbs (arms and legs). Quadriplegia is caused by damage to the brain and spinal cord at a high level.

One of the most common causes of Quadriplegia is trauma caused by aspects such as road traffic accidents, work place accidents, falls and sports injury. These accidents are some of the main causes of Quadriplegia and every year in the UK over 1000 people suffer from some sort of spinal cord injury, most of which are caused due to an accident such as the ones named above.

Quadriplegia causes impairment of the limbs and also slight impairment of the torso, which usually causes problems with controlling the bowel and bladder and loss of sexual function as well as digestion and breathing difficulties. Quadriplegia also leaves victims open to pressure sores, respiratory complications and cardiovascular disease.

An individual who suffers an accident causing an injury at C1 (the highest cervical vertebra, at the base of the skull) will likely lose function from the neck down and be ventilator-dependent. An individual with an injury much lower down the spine may lose function from the chest down but still retain use of the arms and much of the hands.

Victims of accidents who have been left with Quadriplegia can claim for compensation. Although money won’t change what has happened it will ensure that you get the best possible care and will be able to adapt your home to accommodate your needs to give you back some independence that a negligent person took away.
