MRSA Compensation Claims

MRSA stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. It is also referred to as a ‘superbug.’ It has been estimated that one in three of us carry the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus on the surface of our skin or in our nose, this generally causes no harm if the carrier is healthy; however if a carrier comes into contact with a vulnerable patient, i.e. someone with lowered immune, a person with open wounds or someone who has just had surgery the they can pass the infection onto these vulnerable people who will then suffer health problems as a result of it.

If the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus gets into your body through a break in your skin it can cause infections such as boils, abscesses, or impetigo. If however Staphylococcus Aureus gets into your bloodstream it can cause more serious infections such as the following:

  • Septicaemia (blood poisoning)
  • Septic shock (widespread infection of the blood that leads to a fall in blood pressure and organ failure)
  • Severe joint problems (septic arthritis)
  • Bone marrow infection (osteomyelitis)
  • Internal abscesses anywhere within the body
  • Inflammation of the tissues that surround the brain and spinal cord (meningitis)
  • Lung infection (pneumonia)
  • Infection of the heart lining (endocarditis)

MRSA is diagnosed through testing your blood and urine or through taking a sample of tissue from the infected area. Many hospitals now test everyone who is being admitted to see if they are colonised with MRSA. Swabs from the skin and nose, urine and blood samples may be tested for the bacteria. It can take 3-5 days for the results to come back.

MRSA can be spread through merely being in contact with someone who has MRSA but it can also be spread through contact with towels, sheets, clothes, dressings or other objects that have been used by someone with MRSA. The MRSA virus can also survive on objects and surfaces such as door handles, sinks, floors and cleaning equipment.

If you currently have MRSA or you have suffered through it in the last three years you could be entitled to make a claim for compensation.
