Psychological Injury
Psychological injury is the direct result of an individual being exposed to a traumatic event or a series of traumatic events. It has been said that out of all the individuals that are exposed to a traumatic event 25% of them will end up suffering one or more psychological illness, with the most common being depression, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders and personality changes as well as the possibility of being drug and alcohol dependant.
The effect of a psychological injury on an individual differs greatly to the effects seen by a physical injury. Unlike a physical injury an individual may not experience or start to see signs and symptoms of a psychological injury for a number of weeks, months or in certain cases even years after the actual event took place.
The effects on an individual from a psychological injury can include;
- Flashbacks
- Nightmares
- Anger
- Difficulty concentrating
- Low moods
- Fatigue and sleep disturbance.
When psychological injury takes hold of an individual it is rare that they suffer purely one psychological injury. It is more commonly seen that an individual will suffer an array of psychological problems after being in a traumatic accident or event, which is why in almost all psychological injury cases an individual will require a form of medical help.
The most frequent causes of psychological injury arise from abuse in the physical, mental and sexual context, people who have suffered injury whilst in the armed forces, road traffic accidents as well as victims of crime and any other form of accident that happened in a traumatic sense.
