Knee Injuries

With poor training practises and improper equipment it will mean that at any part of your body could be injured through a sporting activity; however sporting activities normally affect the musculoskeletal system, which includes your muscles, bones and associated tissues such as cartilage.

Your knee is the largest joint within your body and forms a hinge between your femur (thigh bone) and your tibia (shin bone). Your knee is also a complex structure with a high weight bearing capacity but it is also the most commonly injured joint with 5.5 million people visiting surgeons every year with knee problems.

Injuries to your knee can result from a blow to the knee or a twist of the knee, which normally occurs from an improper landing after a jump or running too hard without the proper warm up.

Knee injuries can include any of the following:

  • muscle sprains and strains
  • tears of the ligaments that hold joints together
  • tears of the tendons that support joints and allow them to move
  • dislocated joints
  • fractured bones, including vertebrae

A knee injury can cause pain, swelling and instability as well as the possibility of causing cartilage damage. There are two types of cartilage in the knee; meniscus, which is a crescent-shaped disc that absorbs shock between the thigh bone and lower leg bone. The other cartilage is a surface coating cartilage, which covers the ends of the bones at the point which they meet, allowing them to glide against each other.

In order to prevent a knee injury you should exercise regularly and maintain a good level of fitness to ensure that your knee muscles are stronger and better able to support your joints. You should also spend five-10 minutes warming up before and sporting activity and the same amount of time to cool down after a sporting activity.
