Dislocated Shoulder
The dislocated of your shoulder is a very common and traumatic sports injury that can occur across a wide range of sports. A dislocation of the shoulder most commonly happens when the upper arm is forced forwards when the arm is turned outwards (externally rotated) and held out to the side.
Many people are under the belief that a dislocation to the shoulder is a minor sports injury when in reality it has the potential to cause a lot of damage. It can cause damage to the glenoid labrum, which is the ring of cartilage that acts as a cup in which the upper arm rests. This forms the shoulder joint.
A dislocated shoulder joint should be relocated as soon as possible by a trained professional in order to prevent further complications; you should never attempt to ‘pop’ the joint back into position. There is also a strong likelihood that you will need rehabilitation to regain function and prevent it from dislocating again.
Some of the symptoms of a dislocated shoulder include:
- Having a sudden onset of severe pain, and often a feeling of the shoulder 'popping out'
- A visibly deformed or out of place shoulder
- If there is any nerve damage there may also be pins and needles or numbness through the arm to the hand
- Swelling or discoloration
- Inability to move the joint
If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from a dislocated shoulder it is important that you rest it in a sling, take painkillers and apply ice to the area; it is also important that you limit movement in the joint until the healing process is over. A dislocated shoulder will usually take a few weeks to regain function.
Contact sports such as football, hockey and rugby are often responsible for causing dislocated shoulders. You should always seek medical help if you suffer from a dislocated shoulder, even if your shoulder pops straight back into place. A dislocated shoulder also has the potential to cause further damage such as tearing your ligaments and tendons, which reinforce your shoulder joint, it can also cause nerve damage and damage to your blood vessels. Both of these injuries could require you to need surgery to repair the damage caused.
If you have suffered a dislocated shoulder due to a sports injury that should have been prevented then you could be entitled to claim for compensation. If you have been playing a sport and the equipment that you have been supplied with is faulty or if the locating you are playing the sport is unsafe then you could be the one that ends up suffering as a result of it. You could be left with severe personal injury including the dislocation of the shoulder joint.
