Emphysema
Emphysema is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is often caused by a loss of elasticity of the lung tissue. It is a serious lung condition that affects the small air sacs in the lungs known as the alveoli.
Emphysema is an irreversible and degenerative condition; if contracted the most important measure that can be taken is to try and slow the progression by stopping the patient being exposed to lung irritants. Rehabilitation is also offered to improve the patient’s quality of life and to teach the patient how to actively manage their care.
Emphysema can also be treated by supporting the patients breathing with anticholinergics, bronchodilators, steroid medication (inhaled or oral), and supplemental oxygen as required.
So what exactly does Emphysema do? It causes the walls of the alveoli to break down so that larger air spaces are formed; the effect of this means that the total surface area available for gas exchange is greatly reduced. This means that less oxygen gets into your blood and there is a reduced supply of blood to the muscles and vital organs.
Although emphysema is often caused by smoking; occupational hazards are often to blame for the on set of emphysema. If you are continually exposed to irritants/chemicals you could be at risk of contracting emphysema. If you are currently suffering from emphysema due to your occupation then you could be entitled to claim for compensation.
