Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome is also known as vibration white finger and is caused by repeated and frequent use of hand held vibrating tools such as power drills, chainsaws and pneumatic drills to name just a few. Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome may also be caused by holding/working with machinery that vibrates.

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome causes a slight but repeated injury to small nerves and blood vessels in the fingers. It is also estimated that one in ten people may develop Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome. If you are one of these unfortunate people then some of the symptoms that you can expect to start suffering from include your fingers turning white and going cool, the reason behind this is due to the small blood vessels narrowing. They will then turn a blue colour as the oxygen is being used up from the reduced blood supply of the narrowed blood vessels. Finally they will go a bright red colour when the blood vessels open up again; this may cause a tingling, throbbing and slight pain.

As well as the different colouration of your fingers you will also more than likely suffer symptoms related to your nerves such as numbness, loss of feeling, tingling and pins and needles. In most cases these symptoms tend to come and go but in some cases a permanent numbness my extend along the affected fingers; this can often lead to difficulty in doing certain tasks such as handling coins, fastening buttons and holding nails.

As well as this numbness you may also find yourself suffering from aches and pains due to minor damage to the muscles, joints and bones. This can also lead to the strength of your grip becoming weakened.

There are certain ways that you can decrease your chance of contracting Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome such as ensuring your tools are well maintained, using the correct tool for the job, wearing anti-vibration gloves, taking regular breaks, around every 10 minutes and keeping warm at work.

If you are unfortunate to be suffering from Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome then you could be entitled to claim for compensation. Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome can leave you with permanent damage as well as keeping you out of work. If you have suffered from Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome in the last three years due to a situation that should have been avoided then you could be entitled to compensation for your initial injuries, any medical expenses and any loss of earnings that you are suffering from.
